Cooled Solutions for Next Generation LiDAR Systems

By improving temperature stability, you can improve performance across all design corners.

This can be accomplished by using powerful thermoelectric coolers, or TECs. Not only can TECs maximize the sensitivity of LiDAR sensors but they also eliminate temperature-dependent reliability tradeoffs created by LiDAR’s critical environmental and power requirements. By outfitting a LiDAR system with TECs designed to cool optical components, manufacturers can maximize their levels of stability and reliability.

Go Cooled for High Performance

High-performance ToF LiDAR sensors require a cooled laser source to avoid constant performance tradeoffs between range, resolution, and frame rate. Phononic TECs provide the necessary cooling to ensure optimal performance in decision-making speed, perception, and image creation frequency.

Phononic TECs enable LiDAR sensors to deliver the required wavelength stability and control for lasers and detectors operating at the desirable 1550nm wavelength. This stability is crucial for accurate distance measurement and image rendering in ToF LiDAR sensors.

Maximize FMCW Capabilities with Phononic TECs

Cooling the critical LiDAR components is essential for both ToF and FMCW. Cooling enables LiDAR to maintain peak performance throughout a wide variety of range applications and driving environments. Cooling is especially important for FMCW; in order to maintain wavelength stability, the laser must remain at a steady temperature to avoid drifting over a wide operating temperature range (up to 125ËšC). Controlling laser operating temperature is imperative to ensure selectable and locked wavelengths that are reliable over time.

When you partner with Phononic, you get application-specific TECs for your FMCW LiDAR that will cool temperature-sensitive components in the sensors. Our custom-built TECs will also help you improve performance, minimize the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and extend your range.

Reference Designs

Not just any TEC will do when it comes to adding cooling to a LiDAR sensor; that’s why Phononic TECs meet all AEC-Q10x reliability standards as well as IATF 16949 certification — to deliver the quality and reliability necessary to meet the high standard of automotive-grade quality.

The Iris sensor by Luminar was launched in 2024 and is the 1st to enable high speed highway autonomy and pioneer roofline integration for optimal performance. Phononic and Luminar entered the first ever strategic supplier agreement to ensure supply chain integrity to support the market demand for their sensors.
