The future is already here, and it’s bright. Times Square, train terminal displays, and drive-through menus: these are just a few examples of the outdoor digital signage lighting up our world. These devices provide a mix of information and entertainment crucial for a broad range of organizations and applications.
As we move deeper into the twenty-first century, it’s a near certainty that the use of digital signage will continue to increase. Intel reports that digital displays receive nearly 400% more views than static displays. Apocalyptic visions aside, Hollywood is on to something when they portray future cities in movies like Minority Report and iRobot with eye-catching digital displays about the latest products and news.
If there is one feature of these displays that’s anything but futuristic, it’s the cooling systems these signs run on. Commercial vapor-compression refrigeration has been around in some form or another for at least fifty years, and unfortunately many of the long-standing problems with this technology still exist today.
Compression-based cooling systems are bulky, loud, inefficient and full of harmful chemicals.
